Solidarity March with Eritrean Women

We are marching today in solidarity with our Eritrean mothers, sisters and daughters, who are suffering as victims of human rights abuse in their own country as well as in lands where they have ended up refugees. Because of his failure to protect these women and for his role in perpetrating much of the abuse we are calling for Mr Isaias Afwerki to step down from office and hand political power to the people of Eritrea.

Eritrean women have trailed a blaze in their fight against oppression; they overcame traditional practices to rise and challenge political oppression and this has gained them international acclaim. Sadly, all that struggle bore little to no fruit.

Today many iconic women Freedom Fighters find themselves, political prisoners, without even the most basic of rights of a visit from their children or their elderly parents, to mention a few of these women:

  • Aster Yohaness mother of four and a wife of fellow prisoner in prison since 11th Dec 2003
  • Senait Debesay a mother of 3 imprisoned since 15th Nov 2003
  • Meriam Hagos mother of 1 and imprisoned since 6th of October 2001
  • Aster Fisehatsion a mother of one and a wife of fellow prisoner believed to have died in prison, herself imprisoned since Sept 18th  2001

These women and many like them simply disappeared into a prison system where people vanish without a trace. We condemn your government’s barbaric treatment of women prisoners and their families.

Additionally thousands of young women, including vulnerable teenagers, have become victims of rape and sexual harassment at the hands of military commanders who use their position in the system to take advantage of vulnerable young women, forcibly conscripted into the army as part of their compulsory national service.

As a result many women have become refugees falling into the hands of smugglers and traffickers who not only extort money from them, alongside their male counterparts, but also abuse them sexually, inflicting heinous sexual violence on them. The Eritrean Government remains silent on the matter despite the fact that a recent UN report identified high ranking military officials linked to the human trafficking racket.

These violations against our Mothers, Sisters and daughters is an abject indictment of the failures of the regime in Eritrea and particularly the failures of Isaias Afwerki, we therefore demand that he steps down and hands power to the people of Eritrea as the rightful custodians of political power in the country that they fought to free from colonial oppression.

The unconscious mind of Afwerki and Afwerkists

By Fetsum Abraham//3/10/2013

The author of “From Feminist to Rapist” and “The Curse of Being and Living It”

Dedicated to the oppressed people of Eritrea

Testimony: Afwerkists received another humiliating absolutism from the master with absolute obedience. If this article does not shake their intelligence on the sad condition of the Eritrean society and their lives, nothing will. They simply cannot silently accept the content of this material and continue to support the dictator without reducing their intelligence to animalistic mode of thinking!

Motivation: As you know, we can read a phrase and move on with its brief message. The phrase, however, may talk a lot of things behind its superficial image for one interested to investigate. It can tell you a lot of story if you pay attention. I do believe this article will show what I am talking about if you give it a chance (read it fully). Through it, I am trying to communicate with my people about the deep cavity the Eritrean society is trapped in under the absolute dictatorship of one individual because of Afwerkists.

Quote: Expressions reflect a person’s behavior programmed in the unconscious mind without the role of one’s consciousness.

 Hypothesis

In my understanding, Afwerki’s state of mind does not respect blind supporters because it is circumstantially and psychologically molded to confront and challenge anything reasonable and co-existive on the planet. The intensity of the negative energy installed is so deep in this Philosopher that he cannot live in peaceful and transparent social environment. Yet, Afwerki needs contradictions and conflicts to survive his extraordinary urge for dominance because his philosophy is founded on devil’s advocacy to this effect; it is a scavenger of challenges and problems not as a matter of hobby but of necessity.

The philosopher cannot, therefore, be satisfied dominating the submissive Afwerkists without any effort or challenge: They don’t satisfy his confrontational mind-set. A man who strives to dominate everyone at any cost including the nation and the society is not psychologically prepared to appreciate the ridiculously motionless Afwerkist mind. Nothing else but survival should then be the only reason Afwerki remains attached to Afwerkists.

MR. PRESIDENT!

Too many years in asylum could have messed up my commonsense to sound weird to your very rational mind and compassionate heart. I must admit that I have been like that for a while now; yet even an insane person’s mind sometimes has a value and I hope mine will in this monologue in helping you understand yourself from the perspective of the external.

You became the only maker and shaker of our destiny for life. You ignored and excluded us totally on common issues for a very long time. Only your mind represented our country through out its sovereign existence and you called that SELF RELIANCE. You went as far as monopolizing the resultant concept of our being (art, identity, land, country, nationalism), vandalizing every Eritrean psychic content out of us believing that you own the motherland and the people. You proved this mentality by means of denying Nazghi Kiflu (Eritrean Veteran who died in England) to be buried in his country!

Peaceful coexistence requires respect and transparency Sir! Because,In philosophy’s realm of the spirit there is no objective certainty and no confirmation. Communication is the path to truth”; said Jaspers. Further;  ”No one person can attain that concrete nearness everywhere….the individual cannot become human by himself. Self-being is only real in communication with another self-being“.

Seven billion of us in the world are wired differently, the reason we all differ in DNA and in fingerprints. So are close to six million Eritreans with different ideas passionately attached to the motherland. As you know, while the people own the government in democratic societies such as Somalia and Ethiopia, you own the people and the nation of Eritrea through absolute dictatorship.

You disconnected the umbilical cord between you and the society through your deeply entrenched absolutist and exclusionist mentality. You did not understand that life depends on communication, flexibility, freedom, justice and participation (the most necessary elements of SELF RELIANCE). You do not believe in sharing. You absolutely do not give anything but rather absolutely take and dictate everything. Yet, You called this HADELIBI.

One mind claims self-reliance and one heart, HADELIBI in this complicated Eritrean experience under your political philosophy! The mind and the heart then converged at a complex and dangerous point called NIHNAN ELAMANAN by which some Eritreans in this insanity were programmed to cause the suffering and death of many innocent people in what used be called as HALEWA SAWRA and far beyond after independence until this moment in time, according to the revelation of Seid Saleh in ASEENNA interview. The gentleman concluded saying that ‘Zeitezerbember zeitegebre yelen’.

Brother president; let us leave the killing and tortures done to our society because of you and your clique for history and please allow me to discuss my theory of your Super-naturalist philosophy hereunder with some substance.

I am sure you took your time, revising what you were going to say about the FORTO again and again to finally land on the following phrasing as the best reflection of your situation.

Look at what you said; “Entertain no worry at all, as there was – and does not exist – any reason for being apprehensive.”

Brother! I was surprised how deeply in trouble the Eritrean society was having you as a leader just from this phrasing.

Besides the fact that the statement denies you the legitimacy of being a human being with inherent natural element of fear as discussed in two of my last articles dedicated to you, the same words tell another scary thing about you behind the screen that could have passed unnoticed by some people.

Here is the essence in question and check it out!

“No worry at all” implies absolute or total affirmation;

“there was [no] reason” implies absolute or total negation; yet;

“does not exist” implies absolute or total negation and;

“[no] any reason for apprehension” implies another absolute or total negation.

You reflected 4 absolute expressions of fearlessness in a 17-word phrasing. Taking the phrasing as “one” this interprets to 400% absolutist mentality per phrase as short as this; one can only imagine what the percentage of the same would be in a page worth of your expression. The words you used are completely conclusive with no gray areas for people to entertain their ideas; they do not even give you a room to maneuver.

At minimum, this reflects an Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder ” [one] that is characterized by a general psychological inflexibility, rigid conformity to rules and procedures, perfectionism, and excessive orderliness.” But there is something more interesting in the deal!

The catch

This is denial of the concept of duality all together. Absolutism is the extreme point of a duality spectrum that no human being can reach. A human being can only approach relative-excellence not absolutism. No answer is absolutely correct or false in philosophy and the concept of absolutism is not even reachable by Mathematics on definite science itself.

Mr. President;

You have unconsciously claimed to defy two fundamental concepts of the human nature in this LEGENDARY 17-word experience: complete fearlessness and totalitarianism. Meaning; you, at least twice disclaimed being human in your phrasing: by defying fear and by being absolute. The question is: are you God? Let me give you a hint before you answer: only a Supernatural force is fearless and absolute!

I am sorry Sir; but this is very serious! A detaining predicament of a classical explosive sufferer in rejection of life by at least a resultant time proportional to the collective moment of illusion through out the Eritrean experience, and that wasted by the emotional effects of defeat and the associated withdrawal process.

Do you think this is normal?

In “It’s now a proven fact – Your unconscious mind is running your life!”, the author states “The subconscious mind cannot move outside its fixed programs – it automatically reacts to situations with its previously stored behavior responses. AND (here’s the rub), it works without the knowledge or control of the conscious mind. This is why we are generally unaware of our behavior, in fact most of the time we are not even aware that we are acting unconsciously. Studies show that even when we ‘think’ we are conscious, it is our unconscious mind, which is actually making our decisions for us. The scientists [in this experiment] show that most of our decisions, actions, emotions and behavior [take place] beyond our conscious awareness, which means that 95 – 99% of our life comes from the programming in our subconscious mind. So, our life reflects our unconscious programming. “

What this verified human psychology is saying is that you, Mr. President reflected the absolutist fabric programmed in your unconscious mind independent of your conscious mind. In short, your life depends on unnecessary confrontations and negativity beyond your awareness.

This also implies that the unconscious mind of Afwerkists is programmed to accept absolute humiliation independent of their conscious mind. Life for them depends on being humiliated beyond their awareness.

Further,

The job of the subconscious is to create reality out of its program. So if you have negative programming in your unconscious, Dr Lipton says 95% of the time you will recreate those negative experiences in your life [and] most of the programs our unconscious mind runs are based in negativity – for example fear of what other people are thinking about us, fear of not being loved and respected as we are, etc, etc.”

Apparently, image was in your mind when you said what you said instead of your real self. You thought we would question your bravery unless you acted fearless when in fact the issue at hand that relates us to FORTO was nothing but freedom. That thought strategy, however, clearly exposed what is programmed in your unconscious mind in so far as the impression of absolutism was concerned without your sensation; meaning that you are clinically sick.

This also implies that the Afwerkist mind is polluted with the fear of rejection projected from the mind of their master. It is programmed not to ever think another person can lead Eritrea and that the world will nullify the concept of the Eritrean nation without him. That mind does not have an answer as to what is going to happen to the country after the death of the dictator: life and nationhood stops for them after his death, meaning that that mind is clinically sick as well.

.Don’t you appreciate psychology, Mr. president? It tells the true nature of something from a projected image of something else. To be honest with you, I like it to the extent I wish I studied it in college. The good thing is one can learn many things from others and that is really what I am trying to do; learn and apply it in real life. Do you think it is working?

My brother!

Your absolutist mentality is directly related to how intensely ego has totally controlled your mind:  I, me, mine, my in everything you do in the Eritrean experience. Would you be surprised if I relate this absolutistmental fixation to your absolute dictatorship? Can I also relate this absolutist mind to the reality that you have been the only person that mattered in the society since the inception of your power; the only entity that has the legitimate right to do what ever you want in the country. You are the only hero of the struggle, the gold is absolutely yours (no accountability so far), the land is yours (you can deny an Eritrean to be buried in Eritrea) the kids are yours (they are in SAWA forever and their parents can’t visit them there), the prisoners are your property that can be stored or disposed without justice or explanation. The Diaspora cannot come home to live but must pay tax for the identity called Eritrean that you absolutely own.

Can you see your perfectionism in terms of being the best absolute dictator, the most isolated leader, the only leader that does not recognize the Somalian government, the only supporter of Al-Shabab, the only rebel in IGAD and the worst in freedom of speech since 2007, etc.? The first president to reject Obama, the highest refugee producer per capita, the only one running a nation without a University, a Constitution and with institutionalized indefinite labor camp slavery!

Can you now see a little light inside your darkness as to how much of a burden you have been to the over-pressed society?

What is fascinating about you is that you cannot be in the middle but only the best or the worst, the only, the highest, the most, the first or the last. You must be a champion either way in your persistent competition with God, life, nature and the universe. Plainly, you have become a psychological and socio-political case study of the absolutist mind for generations to come. I congratulate you for this everlasting legacy!

My last question to your Excellency: Do you think your being the tallest leader in East Africa fits in this analysis? I just wonder!

Eritrean Youth Solidarity for Change-North America: Makes Change of Leadership

The Board of Directors at Eritrean Youth Solidarity for Change North America (EYSC-NA) would like to let know members of this vibrant group and all change seekers that we have decided to make change of leadership to prevent any catastrophic damage to the organization.

On Saturday March 2, 2013 the board of directors conducted an Emergency meeting  and decided to demote the current chairman of EYSC-NA, Mr. Daniel G.Mikael from his position.

According to the Bylaws of EYSC board of directors has the highest power in the organization and the executive board executes on decisions made by the board of directors, and oversees and implements the daily activities of the organization. These two branches of the organization discuss on issues, make decisions and work together. When disagreement arises decisions are made based on majority votes. However, Mr. Daniel time and again failed to make these two branches to come and work together on issues that are very critical for the movement. A good example of his failures is the divisive public announcement posted on March 1, 2013 on the EYSC facebook under the name Eri-EYSC, which clearly said better if we go our separate ways while the majority of the board members were working on conflict resolution.

The Board has been trying hard to improve the leadership of the movement on resolving problems by discussion. However, the solutions couldn’t come according to the wishes of the majority of the board members. Several of the meetings that were called to resolve such problems did not bear fruit or come to a common conclusion. So due to all these unresolved issues and to mend the organization’s image majority members of the board of directors called an emergency meeting and concluded its meeting with a change of leadership. At the conclusion of this emergency meeting conducted on March 2, 2013: 13 (thirteen) members of the board voted for Mr. Daniel G.Mikael to be removed from his leadership position; none of the board members voted for him to stay in his position; 2 (two) abstained and 4 (four) of the meeting participants did not vote asking for the meeting to continue for Saturday March 9, 2013. Based on the bylaws of the organization and the majority vote in favor of Daniel’s removal from his leadership the board of directors concluded its meeting by demoting Mr. Daniel G.Mikael from his leadership position and the current vice chairman of the organization Mr. Solomon Assefaw to lead the organization as an interim chair person with immediate effect. Mr. Solomon accepted his new position and promised to bring the organization together and the board of directors assured him their fullest support during the critical transition period. The board of directors also agreed for Mr. Daniel to continue as a board member and ask him to work for the betterment of the organization.

On this occasion, the board of directors calls to and believes all members of EYSC around the world to support this decision. We would like to assure you that we are committed more than ever to stop the suffering of our people and country. We also ask you to keep up the hard work to put this vibrant organization as it was hoped for.

EYSC supports all inside and Diaspora based Eritrean change seeking groups and movements to salvage the nation and its people. EYSC reaffirms that it will work hand in hand with all opposition groups (Youth movements, civic organizations, human right groups and political organizations) in the ongoing quest for change in Eritrea.

Meeting participants were 19 and here below are the breakdown of the votes and names of the voters.

Germany’s n-word race debate – BBC

Seven-year-old Timnit Mesghena is an avid reader. In the evenings, she and her father like to sit on the sofa in their flat in Berlin and read to each other. They present an easy picture of family happiness.

One of their favourites is the classic children’s book, The Little Witch, an enchanting tale of a witch who flies and birds who talk.

But one day they reached page 94, and a difficult word came up. It wasneger, describing a black boy. It is true that it can mean “negro” in German, but it also means the utterly offensive “nigger”. When the book was written, the former may have been true – but now it is more like the latter.

Timnit’s father, Mekonnen, had no doubts. He is black, originally from Eritrea, and found the word completely unacceptable.

“It made me very angry,” he says. “I know that people use that word to insult me or to give me the sense of not belonging.”

Eritrea: AU Commission to Take Up Swedish-Eritrean Journalist’s Case

$

Addis Ababa — Media watchdog, Reporters Without Borders, said on Wednesday that, the African Union’s main human rights body has decided to investigate the case of imprisoned Swedish-Eritrean journalist Dawit Isaak.

Eritrean authorities detained Isaak in September 2001 for writing articles critical of the government and has since been held incommunicado.

He is one of the many journalists and reform-minded government figures who remain languishing in Eritrea’s underground detention centers since a government crack down in 2001.

The Swedish office of Reporters Without Borders has highly welcomed the decision of African Union human rights panel to probe Isaak’s case.

The press freedom group also commended the concerns shown by the newly-appointed Special Rapporteur for Eritrea over the situations of Eritrean journalists.

“It is important step forward and will increase the pressure on the Eritrean government” said Jonathan Lundqvist, president to the Swedish section of Reporters Without Borders.

Dawit Issaak’s case was referred to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights on 27 October, by three European jurists.

Lundqvist says bringing the case to the AU panel would not only put more pressure on the Eritrean government but also will make the case an African issue.

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights will soon begin examining the case by first requesting explanations from the Eritrean government as to why the Red Sea nation breached the country’s law as well as several African and international human rights conventions the country is signatory for.

Established by the African Union (AU), the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights was designed to protect and promote human rights and interprets the African Charter.

Eritrea’s Supreme Court has in the past refused to hear the case although the government states that habeas corpus is a principle respected and that the country’s courts are independent.

International human rights organisations routinely label the country as one of the planet’s most repressive. Eritrea has for many years been ranked among the worst places to be a journalist, jailing more members of the press than any other African country

According to investigations revealed by Reporters Without Borders last August, four journalists, who were detained around the same time as Isaak, have died in prison.

Isaak is among dozens of journalists arrested during government crack down in 2001 along with 15 senior government officials who were also then arrested after criticizing President Isaias Afewerki and asking him to allow political reform following the 1998-2000 border war with Ethiopia.

Imprisoned Eritreans complain of being forced to leave Israel

TEL AVIV, 11 March 2013 (IRIN) – Testimonies of jailed Eritrean migrants and asylum seekers (collected by a local NGO) say officials at Saharonim prison in Israel’s Southern Negev desert are coercing them to sign “voluntary repatriation” forms.

In one of the many testimonies a 28-year-old Eritrean detainee reported being repeatedly visited by a translator telling her to accept deportation to a third country (Uganda).

“He said we would not be free from the prison and we can only go to Uganda or Eritrea. I was frustrated and depressed. I do not want to go to Uganda. Today they called me and gave me a handwritten form in Tigrinya which said: `I came from Eritrea to Israel illegally and now I want to go to Uganda voluntarily. To do this I would like the Eritrean embassy to issue me a passport and all the necessary documents.’ They asked me to sign it and wanted to take my picture on video. I refused.”

Israel is a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention but does not recognize Eritreans as refugees, although it does not officially deport Eritreans and allows them to stay in Israel under a group defence (temporary group protection).

Staff at the Hotline for Migrant Workers, who collected the testimonies, say the government is forcibly trying to repatriate Eritreans: “These people have no access to a refugee status determination process, they are detained under the new amendment to the infiltration law that came into effect in June 2012, which allows detention of `infiltrators’ for an unlimited amount of time; now they are told they will never be allowed to leave the prison and their only option is to go back to Uganda/Eritrea. How can this be considered voluntary?” one staff member told IRIN.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) representative in Israel, William Tall, told IRIN the Ministry of Interior made an attempt to offer relocation to some 23 Eritreans to Uganda but without any result so far.

At the end of February he told Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz there was nothing voluntary about this process.

One Eritrean, Tesfamihret Habtemariam, was reportedly deported from Israel earlier this month and is now in detention at Cairo airport after five years in Israel, and may be returned to Eritrea.

UNHCR advises against repatriating Eritrean nationals because of the likelihood of their being punished on return to their country.

Israel’s stance

Under an updated Anti-Infiltration law passed in January 2012, all illegal border crossers are labelled “infiltrators” and can be detained for up to three years.

The Eritreans being held in detention camps in the south are generally not notified about their right to claim asylum or given the application forms needed to do this, report NGOs.

On 18 February, official documents from the Israeli assembly, the Knesset, quote Interior Minister Eli Yishai saying deportations (by definition forced) were not yet taking place.

He said more than a 1,000 nationals of northern Sudan and Eritrea had already left voluntarily and said he hoped a lot more would decide to leave.

“And if it won’t be voluntary leave, it will be involuntary – to their country or to a different third country, and there is still no third country to sign an agreement with, but I hope we do find other third countries that we’ll have an agreement with, and we can transfer the infiltrators from here, from the Land of Israel, to their country or to another country, whether it is done willingly or not.”

Last week the Israel’s Attorney-General Yehuda Weinstein sent a letter widely reported in the local press to the director of the Interior Ministry’s Population, Immigration and Border Authority, Amnon Ben Ami, saying that under no circumstances should Eritrean nationals in Israeli custody be sent “to any destination outside Israel’s borders” until he (Weinstein) further clarifies these legal issues.

Eritrea: Exit Eritrea – How Could It All End for Isaias Afewerki?

$
0
0

BY ANDY RYAN, 14 MARCH 2013

ANALYSIS

Afewerki’s grip on power in Eritirea is showing signs of weakness. But will we see a coup, cosmetic reforms or even an uprising?

Ever since 1993, when Eritrea gained independence and the national assembly elected him president, Isaias Afewerki has ruled over the small East African nation. In these two decades, Afewerki has largely disregarded civil and political rights, jailing dissidents, neglecting to hold elections, banning opposition parties, and restricting freedom of movement.

Regionally, Eritrea became diplomatically isolated after disputes with Ethiopia over access to ports erupted into bloody conflict between 1998 and 2000. Many Eritreans have had to rely on food aid, and thousands of ordinary Eritreans have fled, with many finding themselves at themercy of human traffickers.

According to the likes of Human Rights Watch, Afewerki has turned Eritrea into one of the world’s most repressive and isolated states. But after 20 years in power, recent events suggest the president may be losing his grip on power.

The possibility that Afewerki will remain a president for life is starting to weaken, and speculation has begun on what end his regime will eventually face. Below are three possibilities for how it could all end.

Countdown to a coup?

A coup might be the regime’s most likely end. Recent high-profile emigrations suggest that President Afewerki is losing the trust and respect of former loyalists. These include his Information Minister, two air force officers (making their escape on the president’s private jet), a leading eye surgeon, and a significant portion of the national football team.

Though details remain hard to verify, there also seems to have been afailed coup, mutiny or military protest on 21 January from within the armed forces, laying bare Afewerki’s possibly weakening control of the military.

Afewerki responded with a series of arrests, and will no doubt hope any further potential critics have now been imprisoned or been strongly dissuaded from taking action. However, it is possible that the 21 January events will act as a catalyst for attempts on power, with potential rebels now viewing the regime as vulnerable.

Realistically, a coup led by genuine democratic reformers is difficult to imagine. Instead, the leaders would likely be long-standing members of the regime – probably from the pervasive military or security services.

Few individuals are likely to expose themselves to the considerable risks involved in a coup attempt, only to then contest power at the ballot box. Yet even a new dictatorship would likely show greater pragmatism than the Afewerki regime. Considering the country’s perilous economic situation, there would probably be some attempt to end the country’s current international isolation.

Implementing reform? The 16-year constitutional itch

After 16 years of waiting, it is evident that President Afewerki has no desire to ever implement the 1997 constitution. He has consistently shown himself unwilling to tolerate any form of opposition, and it is almost inconceivable that he would permit the existence of legitimate opposition parties.

The possibility of more limited reform rests on whether the mutiny and high-profile emigrations have had any psychological impact on the president. Following the lead of other dictators throughout history, he could seek to make limited democratic concessions in a bid to gain legitimacy. Yet his record overwhelming depicts him as a man who prefers to tighten his grip through force rather than cunning. His response is much more likely to be increased repression than pragmatic reform.

Popular uprising: an Eritrean Spring?

The probability of this scenario is the hardest to judge. Eritreans have long seen the Afewerki’s People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) exercise power with little restraint, and will be aware of the danger of engaging in open protest.

Opposition groups within the country have been so harshly repressed that it is even hard to see where the necessary spark and organisation might come from.

Yet the Arab Spring spectacularly displayed that well-entrenched regimes can be overwhelmed by popular uprisings. In recent weeks, posters have appeared in the capital of Asmara calling for street protests.

This is an indication of an increasing willingness amongst some Eritreans to defy the regime, and suggests a belief that they may hold the power to end the country’s woes.

The most intriguing question is whether Afewerki would be able to rely on his security forces if confronted by a mass uprising. The loyalty of young conscripts could certainly not be relied upon so, ultimately, much would rest on the decisions of senior officials. They would be forced to judge whether they were protecting a healthy or dying regime – and act accordingly.

THE YPFDJ CULT- part one – Insider’s Account

My Eritrean friends generally do not take me sincerely when I embark on cautioning them about the danger of YPFDJ. As an ardent  former YPFDJ member and one of the chosen minority who were in Eritrea to obtain six months of secretive political cadre training, I might not be the right individual to school any Eritrean, since some may argue that I am blemishing YPFDJ as a result of personal grudge or because I have been excommunicated by the YPFDJ.  When I converse with common Eritreans regarding the danger of the YPFDJ movement, my friends claim I am just another opportunist who tried to gain political power of some sort within the PFDJ/YPFDJ without success and now, I am taking revenge by uttering spiteful rumors against YPFDJ. I have no emotional and personal motives at all. In fact, the truth is on the contrary. I left the YPFDJ while I was at the peak of my career in YPFDJ and nobody chased me away. I was one of the main leaders of YPFDJ.

I left for no other raison d’être than the fact that it became clear to me that it was an unhealthy organization for young Eritreans. In reality, it is not a movement or organization in the conventional sense; it is more of a religious cult than a social, political, communal or civic organization. My conscious mind and inner spirit told me to leave this organization one year ago after several years of doubting the sincerity of the YPFDJ. I prefer to live a life of morality and ethics; I couldn’t force myself to go against my private convictions for little worthless power and notoriety. Unlike many in the YPFDJ, people like Teklia Mekonen from Frankfurt, Tedros Goitom, Sirak Bahlibi, Yodit from UK, Biniam Tareke, Simret Kidane from Norway, Eden Kebede, Senai Solomon from Denmark, Tedros Yared from Norway, Semhar Ghebreab from Germany, Mehari from UK, etc., my inner beliefs wouldn’t let me go against justice and law, mainly, against my democratic and spiritual principles. I am not selfish man. So I chose to deny myself personal career in PFDJ politics by capitalizing on the suffering of the majority of Eritreans.

As a one of the trusted YPFDJ VIPs, I was introduced into the evil thinking manners of the real PFDJ’s inner circle in Eritrea as part of my political cadre education when a certain man by the name of “Desbele” (he did not provide his surname) entered our small classroom under the steamy Sawa heat and began lecturing us on the first course called Social Psychology.  It certainly didn’t take much for us to realize the course was not about how to help or serve people in a community the best way possible; no, it was teachings about the modern methods of mind control, meaning what techniques to employ to control the behaviors, feelings and thoughts of human beings. He was lecturing us in behavior modification techniques utilized by long-gone totalitarian states as the Soviet Union, Maoist China, Nazi Germany, Cuba, North Korea, Iraq, Libya, Chile, Iran, and former Yugoslavia and from few other similar regimes.

Personally, I was shocked and little ashamed that all this political teacher in Sawa could teach was techniques from failed states on how to brainwash people’s minds; It was not expected, it totally surprised many of us who were honored to be chosen and happily looked forward to come from western countries to take some “national political training” in Sawa for about 6 months before returning to our homes in the West. These six months were by the way not all spent in Sawa. Most of the time was spent in Asmara drinking, partying, fornicating and talking about the “great and victorious” Shaebia, particularly about how great the “visionary” leader was. And all our education included only political training, no military training at all.

“Desbele” was instructing us how to use sophisticated and perverted behavior modification techniques; and he was proudly boasting that these techniques can destroy the mental and emotional health of individuals. Basically, he was teaching that any Eritrean, no matter how intelligent, can be controlled, subdued, isolated and eventually forced to become a member or supporter of PFDJ willingly or unwillingly. His main points were what techniques to utilize in order to control the behavior, thoughts and feelings of human beings. He told us that if you can change a person’s behavior, you can change his thoughts and feelings and vice versa. Each component has a powerful effect on the other two: change one and the others will tend to follow. When all three change the individual undergoes a complete change. When there is a conflict between thoughts, feelings or behavior, then those in conflict will change to minimize the contradiction. This is because a person can only tolerate a certain amount of discrepancy between these components which make up his identity. But according to the lecture of Desbele this kind of dissonance is frequently manufactured by states to exploit and control the masses.

Behavior control is all about the control of an individual’s physical reality.

This can include control of where he lives, what he eats, his clothing, sleep, job, rituals etc. This is why most totalitarian regimes, police states, radical organizations have a stringent schedule for members. There is always something to do in destructive religious, political or other associations of radical and fascist agenda. Each organization or state has its own distinctive set of behaviors that bind it together. This control needs to be so powerful that the organization member will actually participate in his own punishment and come to believe he actually deserves it. No one can command a person’s thoughts but -according to the PFDJ mind-control guru Desbele – if you can control an individual’s behavior then his heart and mind will follow.

Furthermore, Desbele lectured us about controlling of an individual’s thought processes this way, now I am just putting it down in summary.

The indoctrination of members and common Eritreans so thoroughly is of great importance, they must be so indoctrinated that they can be able to manipulate their own thought processes. The ideologies of PFDJ have to be internalized as “the truth”, Desbele told us. The Eritrean people in Diaspora must be so indoctrinated day and night by the propaganda of PFDJ via EriTV, radio, internet and PFDJ/YPFDJ members in meetings, cultural and private gatherings and in everyday conversations so much so that any other incoming information is filtered through their ingrained “PFDJ” belief mind which also regulates how this information is thought about.

The PFDJ has its own language techniques and behavior techniques which further regulates how a person thinks. This puts a great barrier between PFDJ members and the common Eritrean.

Another form of control is “thought stopping” techniques. This can take many forms: national and religious parties, festivals, concerts, singing, seminars, conferences, mekhete, zekre sematat, media propaganda, interviews and lectures by PFDJ sponsored intellectuals, Bidho Tour, the YPFDJ conferences, Sawa Festivals, etc. The goal is to deny a person the information needed to make a sound judgment and he will be incapable of doing so. People are trapped in fascist organizations because they are denied the access to the critical information they need to assess a situation. The psychological chains on their minds are just as powerful as if they were locked away physically from society. So strong is this psychological process, that they also lack the properly functioning internal mechanism to process any critical information placed in front of them.

The use of these techniques short-circuits the persons’ ability to test any other reality than the PFDJ artificially created one. The person can only think positive thoughts about the PFDJ. If there is a problem the member assumes responsibility and works harder.

Desbele continued to lecture us on how to control the emotions of YPFJ members and other Eritreans in general by manipulating a person’s range of feelings. Guilt and fear are used to keep control. YPFDJ/PFDJ members cannot see the control by guilt and like other abuse victims are conditioned to blame themselves when things are wrong, even grateful when a leader points out their transgressions.

Fear is used to manipulate in two ways, according to Desbele. The first is to create an outside enemy (we vs. them) who is persecuting you. The second is the fear of punishment by the leaders if you are not acting in accordance with “wudubawi senegebri.” Behaving in accordance with “wudubawi senegebri” is following the ideology perfectly. The most powerful emotional control is phobia indoctrination. This can give the person a panic reaction at the very thought of leaving the YPFDJ/PFDJ. It is almost impossible to conceive that there is any life outside the YPFDJ movement. There is no physical gun held to the member thinking of leaving, but the psychological gun is just as powerful, if not more powerful.

I was totally baffled at what I was listening to and I felt I was being victimized receiving mind control education to apply on my fellow YPFDJ members and other Eritreans. Personally, it never dawned on me to treat my fellow countrymen as tools or instruments, herds to be used and controlled and manipulated at the order of PFDJ highest elites. I actually was gullible and naïve to think that the PFDJ leaders were fully and wholeheartedly committed to serve the Eritrean people with no ulterior motives. To my disappointment, I found out it was all power game, especially when you go higher and higher in the PFDJ and YPFDJ echelon. YPFDJ stinks of opportunists, Tewlijee, half-casts, mixed Eritreans, who mentally and culturally are not Eritreans and the majority who participate in conferences never been to Eritrea a single time.

The few who were born in Eritrea and raised there and who speak fluent Tigrigna are marginalized and considered as out-casts in the YPFDJ. It is really funny, but it is the truth. The real Eritreans are considered pariah in YPFDJ, diaspora-born or/and raised “Eritreans”, (especially if they are mixed, mulattos), who cannot speak good Tigrigna and who have little knowledge about Eritrea are more preferred, since they are eager to prove their “Eritreaness” by obeying orders and working harder than the real Eritreans, who are well-versed in Tigrigna and knowledgeable about the ominous state of affairs in the homeland and who frequently are openly inquisitive of sensitive political issues and social agendas with political nature.

They do not come to Yemane Monkey’s conferences for parties, drinking like many of the diaspora-born and raised Eritreans and mixed children, but to engage in hard talk on national issues; And most of them are never allowed to return again because they get banned from the YPFDJ indefinitely.

In this twisted period of Eritrean history, Eritreans -who never lifted a single weight during the independence struggle, the border conflict of 1998-2000 and the 22 years of national service and national building- and their children born and raised in Europe and USA are taking pleasure in and benefiting from the current Eritrea predicament, while the real Eritreans who struggled and suffered for Eritrea during the revolution and after the struggle, during the nation building era, are treated as outsiders and traitors. It is indeed comical and poignant turn of events. Zemene Girinbit. The only logical explanation or a near logical explanation about why this is happening is provided by Desbele in a remarkable sentence he uttered on that hot sunny day in Sawa, that Sewra deka endabel´et eya metsya. That the Eritrean revolution developed by consuming its children. He further elaborated by saying some of the children were consumed in the noble trench or field warfare against the enemy, while other “Falulawyan” and political speculators were consumed and crushed by the “Wudub” itself. He said it was a natural process and people who question the great organization are not needed and will be immediately discarded, only individuals who execute orders and do what is told to them will be uplifted. He told us that the YPFDJ and the PFDJ members need bravery to execute even the most difficult orders, people with obsessive allegiance to the PFDJ are more greatly needed than people with brains, ideas or university degrees. Desbele told us this without any hesitation or shame.

Therefore, it is clear that YPFDJ is just another propaganda machine and financial institution for the PFDJ. In my next article, I will expose more of what Desbele taught regarding how to combat anti-PFDJ elements, especially those Desbele belittled by naming “Debrezeyti” youths, who in Desbele’s eyes are the most dangerous anti-PFDJ elements and it is this very important job of YPFDJ to counterattack them via propaganda including using violent means, if necessary, in everyplace and at all times.
